MinTIC Interview - Lyra, Open Source AI and Regional Innovation in Colombia
Overview
In 2024, Colombia’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (MinTIC) produced an official interview and news feature about my work as an AI engineer and creator of Lyra, an open source AI assistant for Linux.
The interview was professionally recorded at Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira by a journalist sent from Bogotá and was later distributed through institutional communication channels, regional television, YouTube and official social media platforms.
The feature focused on the development of Lyra, my contributions to open source software and the role that local innovation can play in advancing Artificial Intelligence initiatives outside major technology hubs.
About Lyra
At the time of the interview, Lyra was in version 0.5.0 and represented an early attempt to build a locally executed AI assistant for developers and Linux users.
The project combined:
- Linux
- Python
- Small Language Models (SLMs)
- Open source technologies
- Local AI execution
Lyra was designed as both a programming copilot and a Linux assistant capable of answering questions and assisting users without relying entirely on cloud-based services.
Although significantly more limited than current versions, the project demonstrated the viability of local AI solutions built using open source technologies.
Topics Discussed
The interview explored several areas including:
- Artificial Intelligence.
- Open source software.
- Linux ecosystems.
- Community-driven innovation.
- Regional technology development.
- Building AI products outside major tech centers.
- The future of local AI assistants.
The conversation also highlighted how community participation and open source collaboration contribute to the growth of technological ecosystems.
Why MinTIC Featured the Project
The interview was conducted due to several factors:
- The impact and visibility of Lyra.
- Contributions to open source software.
