FLISoL Pereira 2024 – Media Interview on Free Software and the Local Open Source Community

Overview

As one of the organizers and community leaders behind FLISoL Pereira, I was interviewed by El Diario to discuss the upcoming 2024 edition of the Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre (FLISoL).

The interview focused on explaining the importance of Free Software, the growth of the Open Source ecosystem in Pereira, and the collaborative work carried out by volunteers, universities and local technology communities to organize one of the region’s largest technology events.

Beyond promoting the festival itself, the conversation became an opportunity to highlight how community-driven initiatives can strengthen local technical ecosystems and encourage knowledge sharing.

Background

FLISoL is the largest Free Software outreach event in Latin America, bringing together developers, students, educators and technology enthusiasts through conferences, workshops and installation sessions.

As the local organizer in Pereira, my responsibilities included coordinating speakers, planning the technical agenda, promoting the event and connecting different technology communities around a shared objective: making Open Source technologies more accessible.

The interview served as a way to invite the public to participate while explaining why events like FLISoL matter beyond software installation.

Main Topics

During the interview we discussed:

Community Impact

The interview helped increase visibility for the event while encouraging broader participation from students, professionals and organizations interested in open technologies.

Why Media Outreach Matters

Building technology communities extends beyond organizing technical conferences.

Media interviews provide an opportunity to introduce Open Source concepts to a much broader audience, including people who may have little or no previous exposure to Free Software.

Communicating technical ideas in an accessible way is an important part of community leadership and helps create stronger regional technology ecosystems.

Reflections

Leading community initiatives requires more than technical knowledge.

It involves building relationships, coordinating volunteers, communicating with institutions and creating opportunities where people can learn, collaborate and contribute.

Interviews like this help extend the impact of community events beyond those who attend in person, promoting a culture of openness, collaboration and continuous learning.
